[2001] EWCA Civ 1253 [2001] EWCA Civ 1253

The Police Regulations 1995 SI 1995/215 did not interfere with the common law contractual right to retire on the expiry of a fixed-term contract of employment and a senior police officer on a fixed-term contract could not be subjected to police disciplinary processes after the expiry of that contract.

Casual onward transmission of a letter preparatory to a reference that contained mention of criminal proceedings against the claimant could not attract qualified privilege and was an actionable publication for the purpose of a claim in libel.
