ACCUSATION OF AN INNOCENT PERSON ACCUSED OF ROBBERY

In an appeal against a sentence of 12 months’ imprisonment for an offence of perverting the course of justice, because the appellant had two young children who were fully dependant upon her and it appeared that she was likely to lose her state benefits unless the sentence was substantially reduced, the Court of Appeal was minded to quash the original sentence and order that she serve a term of six months’ imprisonment, in the interests of mercy alone.
